Marquis doubles its color book printing capacity with a new Heidelberg press

Marquis doubles its color book printing capacity with a new Heidelberg press

Marquis is taking another step towards its Horizon 2025 strategic investment plan, announced in November 2021, with the commissioning of a brand-new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 LED UV press at its Montmagny plant.

This investment of more than $6 million is part of the company’s overall investment plan, which has received financial support from Investissement Québec and the Quebec government. This new equipment will allow Marquis to reinforce its position as the largest book manufacturer in Canada and to expand its service offering. This press will immediately double Marquis’ colour book production capacity while reducing its environmental impact and significantly improving printing quality.

“Among the solutions that enable companies to innovate and increase their productivity, automation and the integration of digital technologies are key success factors. The Investissement Québec team is pleased to see the realization of Marquis’ growth projects, which combine innovation, productivity and sustainable development.” – Guy LeBlanc, President and CEO of Investissement Québec.

“The Quebec government supports companies like Marquis Book Printing that are modernizing their facilities to improve efficiency and go green. With this investment, the Montmagny plant will be able to accelerate its growth and maintain its status as a leader in book printing across North America. We are proud to contribute to the development of this local company,” said Mathieu Rivest, MNA for Côte-du-Sud.

Twice the capacity thanks to increased efficiency

The technological elements of this press will be of great use to Marquis. “Continuous production is possible thanks to Push to Stop; the handling time for feeding plates is reduced thanks to Plate to Gallery (a first in North America); the folding capacity will increase with the Stahlfolder TH 82; and finally the feeding of this sheetfed press can be done by rollers thanks to the CutStar,” says Jean-François Paquin, Vice President, Eastern Region, Heidelberg Canada Ltd.

The new XL 106 Colour UV LED press is a model of efficiency because of the addition of the latest technology coupled with UV LED technology, which speeds up curing time. “Faster curing combined with greater production capacity will provide faster turnaround times for our customers,” says Marquis’ President, Serge Loubier.

More environmentally friendly colour printing

The rapid drying of the ink on the surface of the paper, without heat and without VOC emissions, allows printing with optimal quality on all types of paper stocks, including uncoated (offset) and recycled papers. This alternative to coated paper is a more environmentally friendly and economical option for publishers. In addition, UV LED technology consumes 10 times less energy than conventional UV and generates no ozone emissions. Finally, it should be noted that the manufacturing of this press has been certified carbon neutral.

For Marquis, the acquisition of this new press represents another step towards reducing its environmental footprint.

Announcement

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

September 1, 2020

Despite the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the economy and within the printing industry, Marquis is announcing two significant investments at our Toronto plant. These investments aim to increase the production capacity of monochrome and colour books for trade, educational and professional publishing markets.

” These investments demonstrate the trust we have in the publishing world. We sincerely believe that the paper book is resilient and will go through future crises and technological developments to remain the refuge of knowledge and imagination. We have dedicated and very professional employees who operate our equipment and the existing management team created the confidence to enable Marquis to continue to invest in the operations of Marquis Toronto”.

Serge Loubier, President and Chief Executive Officer – Marquis Book Printing

The first investment is to meet the current strong demand from the trade book publishers due to the lack of book printing and binding capacity in North America:

•          A reconditioned Timson press has been acquired and the installation is expected to be completed by the end of September at its Toronto plant, this new equipment brings to 9 the number of offset rotary presses in operation at Marquis.

” The addition of a Timson press specially built for the monochrome trade market will allow us to make better use of the capacity available on our perfect and case binding lines to which we add shifts”.

Jason Foubert, General Manager – Marquis Toronto

The second investment is to better meet the evolving needs of the educational and professional markets. It consists of server upgrades and color controls for our HP T300 and HP T360 rotary inkjet presses. The installation of this latest HP technology will significantly increase the productivity of digital presses by reducing start-up times and increasing printing speed.

“These HP inkjet press upgrade investments will support publisher market trends towards lower print runs & POD. New workflow compatibility opens the door for publisher integration and development discussions, helping publishers successfully respond to changing supply chain requirements and online order growth”.

Mike Collinge, Executive Vice- President – Marquis Toronto
